Australia the place to be during economic downturn

Written on the 27th of May 2009

Australia has topped a poll as the best country in the world for surviving the current economic downturn, living up to our reputation as 'the lucky country'.

The Servcorp study of 7,500 international businesspeople from more than 24 nations asked respondents to identify which country they thought was performing the best in the current economic climate.

One in five international businesspeople cited Australia as the best place to be, ahead of China, with India and Singapore in equal third place.  Australia also placed first in the survey of just Australian businesspeople, showing that the doom and gloom isn't actually affecting the people too much.

While Australians appear to be rising above the doom and gloom, they are still worried about by it - with 36% of Australian business people saying their primary concern with the economy is the low morale in the media.  This is further indication that Aussies are sick of hearing bad news so it's time for the media to start focusing on the positives.

Top ten countries perceived to be surviving the economic downturn the best, as voted by international businesspeople are:

1st Australia
2nd China
3rd equal India, Singapore
5th Hong Kong
6th Canada
7th equal Japan, Qatar
9th New Zealand
10th equal Malaysia, Sweden, Vietnam

The biggest concerns of Australian businesspeople during the economic downturn are:

36.1% The low morale in the media
25.3% The way the Australian Government responded to the crisis
25.3% The low morale in the Australian business community
24.1% Concern the world economy is preventing Australian businesses from recovering quickly
19.3% Concern about the position of their trading partners
15.7% The failure of existing regulations and financial infrastructure
